"Let us make humankind as our image..."

This is a slightly different translation of the biblical line found in Genesis 1:26. It's the way my girlfriend's theology teacher reads it, and it's really caught my attention. To read it not as "I will put My image in people; I will put a part of Myself in them," but rather as "I will make people as My image in the world I created".

This is not merely an interesting theological niggle. It makes me see something in the Bible in a new way, in a living way. That's a powerful thing.

We are God's image. Jesus was God's avatar (and something more), which is the perfection of that image in a human body.
